Spearfish High School senior Kaitlyn Hemmingson is the winner of the second annual KEVN Black Hills FOX Rising Star of the West scholarship contest. Along with that honor, Hemmingson is the recipient of a $2,500 college scholarship. She plans to attend South Dakota State University in the fall.
Hemmington presented a one minute on-air commentary in February, earning her a spot in May’s finals along with Bison High School senior Austin Kopren, Stevens High School freshman Lynae Tucker and Custer High School senior Libby Marking. All four finalists then presented four more one minute commentaries in the finals in May. The scores from viewers on blackhillsfox.com were combined with the scores of a KEVN Black Hills FOX panel to pick the winner.
KEVN Black Hills FOX general manager Cindy McNeill says she was very impressed with the overall quality of this year’s entries. McNeill added, “I am excited that the station was able to provide this opportunity to allow high school students to appear on Black Hills FOX News and talk about issues important to them. I am also thrilled that we were able to provide the scholarship to help Kaitlyn with her education.”
KEVN Black Hills FOX would like to thank all of the students who submitted entries this year.
